We go here everytime we are in Dunedin. Have never had a bad meal or service. This visit I was especially impressed with Maggie who went above and beyond with servic. We have tried just about everything on the menu and it's all worth trying. I wish I could give 10 stars! Price per person $70–80 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
We had high expectations for dinner and were sorely disappointed. We had calamari with edamame bean pesto - calamari cooked perfectly and pesto totally tasteless. We both had the Pan Seared Catch of the Day - gunard with Little Neck Clams. The seafood was cooked well but all were swimming in oil. Worst part, my first bite of clam included a large chunk of rock. The owners response was "clams frequently have some grit in them". Sorry, but they don't when I serve them. We also sampled the stir-fried vegetables. Cooked al dente but also with too much oil and swimming in a 1/2 inch of sauce. To top off our experience, the venue was exceedingly loud due to a table of 12 male diners yelling at each other at the top of their lungs. When askwd about our experience, we mentioned all of our experience to our hostess/wait staff - a very nice and helpful young woman (she was not at fault at all). She quickly relayed our experiences to the owner against our wishes, which led to the owner compting us the cost of 1 main dish. While appreciating the gesture, it wasn't what we wanted. We wanted a great dinner and experience which sadly, just wasn't possible. The emphasis should have been on getting it right before the food went out to the paying customer. Really enjoyed my time here. I had a great meal out with the Whānau after my graduation ceremony and even came back later that evening with some friends to further enjoy the celebration. Whilst the music itself was a bit average I felt the company, service and atmosphere within sufficiently compromised. Will for sure be back again. Only gave 4/5 for the atmosphere because of the slightly average music, otherwise I love this place and would highly recommend. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4 Recommended dishes Bang Bang Chicken
We had lunch at Vault 21. Lovely room and on a cold rainy day, sitting on the heated bench by the window was very cosy. I ordered the eggplant, which was delicious but 4 small pieces of eggplant was not enough; the plate was mostly rice and salad greens. My husband had the mussels and they were disappointingly chewy and the sauce was too lemony to really enjoy. It overpowered the flavour of the mussels. We didn't see the waiter again once the plates were delivered so no one checked in with us to make sure we were happy with our meal. No offers of more beverage, dessert etc. The server was pleasant but I think had too much to handle for just one server. Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3
Ate here twice when staying in Dunedin. Very popular as it's central. Mostly great food (though the Korean Fried Chicken wasn't that tasty). Very loud when it's full. Having booked based on the other excellent reviews here, we were very disappointed. I accept things can go wrong but it's a sign of great place if they can recover from a glitch - Vault 21 tried but only partially did. From the moment we arrived there was zero rapport between staff and customer. Our booking wasn't found, we were seated at a table that wasn't prepared, it took ages to take our order and then that order never made it to to the kitchen. It took an hour and a half of badgering multiple wait persons before we had any food on our table. To their credit Vault 21 did reduce our bill but our experience and the mediocre food certainly won't entice us back. Pretty good fusion restaurant. Food is nice, portions for mains a tiny but thats kind of expected for type of place, some of the dishes are quite bland i.e the bang bang chicken and very pricey for what it is. I highly recommend trying the sweet and sour pork, it is delicious! Also the Japanese sunset cocktail was lovely. Asides from a small mix up everything was smooth!
