Not every meal has to be gourmet. For a fast and fun feed, Ta’tacos on the back blocks of town sells French tacos. If you’re not French, you might be scratching your head. They are basically folded and grilled flour tortilla parcels, containing French fries, meat, sauces and cheese, which have more in common with burritos than tacos.
So from a list of three meats—beef, chicken or spicy merguez sausage—you choose one (880VT) or two (1180VT). There are five different sauces ranging from mustard to mayo. and you can add either one or two. From a short list of optional add-ons I chose cheese (150VT) but it wasn’t as melted as I would have liked. The resulting parcel even with beef (mince rather than the pictured steak) is a substantial feed. Luckily there was a hungry dog that told me he could help me with any leftovers.
Loaded chips (240VT) with bacon (150VT) and cheese (150VT) did a better job of melting the grated cheese, but with chips on your taco, they’re superfluous to need. I did however like the croq’tata (390VT)—a petite grilled ham’n’cheese sandwich. The affordable prices here make it popular with Ni-Vanuatu people as well as tourists, but with 8–10 parking spaces servicing 6 outdoor tables, it’s not hard to get a spot.
