I do want to share this story. Literally, everywhere on this island that my wife and I went, we were treated Awesome; we enjoyed our week there. We got offered a pizza on the house from Mike, at Mike's Pizza (very good dude). Nash at Snapper got me a shot with him, Extremely cool dude. Partied a few nights at Tiny Gecko with their owner. Met locals at Facebar, Neal's, and threw down with transplants at the Joint and Isla Brewing.
However, for WHATEVER reason, when I sat at the benches, street side, the "bartender/owner," whatever he is, literally did not acknowledge me for 15+ minutes. I was gonna leave after just 5 minutes, but I thought I'd see how long I would be ignored. I watched how he had continued convo with 2 other guys. Even restarting a convo, like "So, how long are guys visiting?", knowing I was sitting there waiting to order with him. A minute later, some of their friends came by, and he made cocktails for them and then chatted about the island with them. Then another bar staff persom came by, he talked to them about whatever, I didnt pay attention. I just sat there waiting for him to acknowledge me, another customer.
So, after another 10 minutes, I know bc I kept time on my watch, all the while actually being humored and entertained by this blatant disrespect from this American guy behind the bar, I finally chuckled and went to Face Bar and proceeded to enjoy our day there.
After leaving Face Bar, my wife and I both walked by this bar again and noticed another couple sitting where I was seated. I said to her, "I wonder if he sees them or will he ignore them too".
We went to grab bottled waters from Oxxo and then walked by again, 5 min later to grab coffees, we noticed the couple STILL had no drinks in front of them, and as we walked past, we saw the girl get up angrily and walk away and the husband quickly gather their stuff and follow her. She was clearly upset.
I have no idea what mental issues this guy had going on. He had paint on his hands and shorts, so maybe finger painting and coloring books? My only guess is maybe he was mentally challenged, which is ok; they need to work too.
I expect there will be a response by the "owner" and the "owner" will defend his little insignificant bar that is surrounded by SO many others that actually service their customers that sit down to spend money. The "owner" will say This and That and even put the blame toward me. He may even say I was belligerent (I didnt say a word, I just politely just sat there waiting to be acknowledged. I had not even had my first drink that afternoon; I was hoping to get my first one there, actually.
Go here or don't go here, but if you do, be prepared to not even be acknowledged. Not a "be right with you" or, "How ya doin?" or, "Can I get ya something?" Nothing, from this guy.
I'm eager to see the response, actually. How can a business owner even try to defend this ridiculous example of rudeness?
I guess we do commend this bar for having a mentally and socialably challenged individual trying his hand at bartending and serving customers; Good for them.

Ivan is the man! Cool, little bar where locals and tourists can meet and and enjoy cold beers! Great place to make friends. Ivan is a very nice owner and is often there to hang out.
