Our experience at Bacchus was one of the best during our entire trip through New Zealand. The owner talked with us, gave us so much insight into his 30 year history in Dunedin and the food was absolutely amazing! The fish was so fresh and served beautifully, and the desserts were fantastic. Plus, our daughter is still talking about the best chocolate martini she's every had! We stopped in here for lunch and beer. We discovered an appetizer called "Prawn Twisters", an amazing invention. They were so good and the atmosphere was so good, we returned for dinner and did the same meals (different craft beers) all over again. Stairs lead to the cosy restaurant over looking the Octagon. Friendly and very accommodating staff and chef for specific food requirements. Prompt service. I sat at the table by the window for airflow and view. Service Dine in Meal type Lunch

Outstanding. Mindblowing flavours. Duck salad was amazing, fish of the day came with mandarin sauce, rhubarb creme brulee was just perfect! Thoroughly enjoyed it, definitely will be back ! Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $100+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
We came here for a three course dinner, we had the chicken liver pate, beef cheeks, lamb, steak, crème brûlée, date and banana pudding The food tasted good, nothing that really stood out, the desserts were a bit too sweet for us. View was good as you can see the octagon, nice and quiet small-ish restaurant, slightly limited menu selection. Atmosphere 4/5 Service 4/5 Food 3.5/5

After climbing the old staircase, I came to a bright and airy space. I was away from the hustle and bustle of the town, and that was fantastic after a busy morning. The waiter was quickly at my side, and with friendly professionalism, he had me seated at a table overlooking the Octagon. Once again, I had a sense of relaxation, which was great. Bacchus was doing me good. The menu was well balanced with some great options. The wine list was one of the best I've seen in Dunedin with a good selection of New Zealand and international wines. It was a pity I was driving, so I stuck to the fruit juice. I chose a dish of polenta with summer vegetables and blue cheese. It was divine, everything cooked beautifully. The polenta cake soft and not undercooked, which a lot of polenta is. Most importantly, the blue cheese was at room temperature, soft creamy, and fruity. Those two things combined beautifully with the vegetables. I loved it. My kind of lunch dish, not too heavy but enough to get you through to dinner. Unfortunately, time constraints stopped my from trying a dessert, But I'll be back, probably not for dinner as the stairs will stop my dinner companions, but I'll definitely do another lunch visit. Went there for lunch and ordered Paella. Overall good meal but not exceptional. Paella is the soupy type but I prefer the drier version. It has plenty of seafood and nicely cooked. It is located in a nice historical building and staff is attentive but not overbearing. Certainly one of the fine dining restaurant that worth visiting in Dunedin.
Hmm, our weakest dinner in a week + in NZ by far. The lamb rust was overdone and completely tasteless. Cheese plate and wine were very good, and we had a great recommendation for wine. I had a much much better lamb at Spleight Ale Bar at a much cheaper price. The vegetables were overdone, the lamb not medium rate, chewy and the dish had very little flavour that we asked for the sauce. In short a very disappointing dinner. I would go somewhere else or just drink / have cheese plate that were good Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $60–70 Food: 1 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
Had lunch there today, top notch food which is well presented. Tuna Tataki, med/rare eye fillet and the Rhubarb crème brûlée were all spot on in a very relaxed setting with very friendly staff. Recommend. Service Dine in Meal type Lunch
