Being a huge ice cream fan (have some almost every night before bed), I couldn't wait to visit this place after hearing it was the Ice Cream Capital of the World. We finally had a chance during a recent trip home when we had a little extra time to spare. The building was modern, clean and full of energetic employees and the ice cream was delicious (see pictures). There was a great gift store to complement the ice cream counter as well as a small media center / showhall that shows a history of the family and company (see pictures). If you have the opportunity to swing a little out of the way on your trip up I-29, I highly recommend a quick stop in this quaint little town. Great tasting ice cream! It was a fun little visit on our road trip. The upstairs offers a little history of Blue Bunny Ice cream and interactive stations for kids. It's truly a great place to check out!
Oh boy was this a real treat. We took the long drive from Sioux Falls with the family and it was well worth it. This visit changed my opinion about Blue Bunny Ice cream for the better. They say you can taste all the flavors, but gee whiz, you'd really be holding up the line. Busy place on the weekends, in the summer none the less. (What should I have expected ? lol.) The kids loved it as did the adults. Reasonably priced. The employees all seemed to be high school kids and did lack some basic customer service skills. They seemed to be like a deer in the headlights. So lower your expectations there.

If you are in the area and looking for a short excursion this is the place to go. The experience is worth getting off of I-29 and heading over to the Blue Bunny (Wells) Ice Cream Parlor. The selections are amazing and the serving sizes are huge. One scoop is insane. The gift shop has lots of souvenirs to add to your collection. Don’t forget you can go up to the outdoor patio and enjoy your ice cream outside on the rooftop.
Two words - Lemon Meringue Float! Oh... that's three. Sorry I'm in a heavenly sugar coma. Staring at the rows of delicious flavours, it's almost easy to bypass this delicious treat. I think it took the young man longer to construct the float than it did for me to finish it. Seriously, you won't be disappointed. Unfortunately, the museum above the shop was still closed due to Covid, but I did get a few fun facts at the entrance. La Mars was named the Ice Cream Capital of the world in 1994, producing more ice cream than anywhere else annually. Wells Ice Cream is home to the Blue Bunny and Halo brands and uses enough ice cream sticks in its products each year to stretch from New York to San Francisco twice. The specially designed South Plant Freezer in La Mars is 12 stories high, and the 200 million gallons of ice cream produced each year could fill 5 Olympic-sized swimming pools every week of the year. Now you know. Go eat some ice cream.
