I’d definitely recommend giving The Salty Sea Dog a try. We had the hake & chips, snoek & chips and a chicken burger. The chips were perfect, nice and soft on the inside, a little crispy on the outside. The snoek was absolutely delicious, and I’d especially recommend trying it if you haven’t before. The hakes were a bit oily but fresh and good nonetheless, and the batter to fish ratio was perfect! The chicken burger was underwhelming, the chicken patty tasted like it was one of those cheap freezer patties but then again this is a seafood restaurant. Our food arrived very quickly even though it was busy. And the servers are friendly as well. It has a pretty good atmosphere, very laid back and family friendly. Don’t be scared away by the prices. It is not because of the wonderful setting, it is because not only are the portions absolutely massive, the quality is by far the best I have experienced at any “fish and chip” shop in the Western Cape- no jokes. We had a Snoek + chips and a Hake plus slaw on the side. I reckon that fish was swimming in the ocean just before we ordered it- so fresh. Chips were the hand cut real potato style and the slaw was not swimming in sauce. The service by “Smiley” as we called him (I think his name badge said Nkosi (or similar), was professional, efficient and friendly. The glasses and cutlery were spotless. The drinks were ice cold. The bill came to R400 (including 2 draught beers) before tip and we have enough leftovers for dinner as well. Restaurant was clean, staff were friendly. We felt a lot more welcome here than we did walking past some of the other shops in the harbour. Highly recommended. Waiter was quick to take drink orders, but the rest of the experience was very disappointing. Food took more than 40 minutes, waiter didn't check in on us. Quality of the food was very poor. When I wanted to pay at the till, I had to call one of the staff to pay the bill. When they eventually came, she just took the card, put the transaction through and left. No talking or apologies for the long wait to pay or for the food. Very disappointed. Didn't realise that they charge on average an extra R25 per meal for sitting in. Salty yes, sea food yes, no dogs but great honest fish and chips if a bit bony. Best Dom Pedro! Leonard was outstanding as our server - and only 5 minutes to those penguins…. Food: 3 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3
Food was very tasty. Lovely portion of fish. A bit pricy for pensioners. Could get the same at a restaurant over the road for much less. No filter coffee was a let down. Place was very crowded. Rather awkward for my elderly mother with her walking stick to move around. Service could have been better. Food took a while to be brought to the table. Tourist seemed to get preferential service above locals. Outside toilets left a lot to be desired. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend The Salty Sea dog. We ordered the platter which was fish, onion rings, calamari, prawns, samoosa, chips and rice with a tartar sauce all for R370 which was all worth it. Value for money. We also ordered a fish cake for R45 which was so massive, a size of a saucer. The service was great and food came out fast even though it was busy. The chips were a bit overdone for me and a bit too much oil or deep fried. Hoping the prawns would be grilled and not deep fried. Spacing of tables were a bit too close that it became a bit of a maze to get out but these are all minor things. Real value for money and good food Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Price per person R 250–300
This was my first time at The Salty Sea dog. I found the pricing very high and service very slow. The place is very cramped if it is full. Toilet facilities need a major upgrade, which is very unpleasant. Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Price per person R 150–200 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
Exceptional hake and chips, one of the freshest we’ve had. We felt the calamari was not as good in comparison but definitely worth it for the hake. Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Price per person R 200–250 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes Fish
We were craving some fish and chips and according to the internet, this is the place to go when you're in the Simon's Town area. The menu is pretty basic. We didn't see any combo choices. So decided on hake & chip, as well as calamari & chips. Just know that they do not add any spices, you do however receive the tomato sauce, vinegar and salt sachets. The chips are firm, they're not really "slap chips. The hake is amazing. And the calamari was good too. The take away area isn't that great. The sit down area looks like it can be a vibe. Friendly service. Service Take out Meal type Lunch Price per person R 100–150 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 2 Recommended dishes Hake Calamari and Chips
