LOVE this place. Absolute best Eritrean food we've tried anywhere - including LA and Seattle where they say has some of the biggest populations outside of Eritrea. THE PEOPLE It's owned and run by the family. The mother is the chef and daughter is pretty much always there waiting customers. It looks like the restaurant itself is an extension of their home (or at least A home). THE FOOD The best part is that they have an extensive vegetarian menu beyond just the standard "veggie platter" you can get at any Ethiopian or Eritrean place. MUST TRY THE MUSHROOM TIBS. Every carnivore we've taken here has loved it. Also get the veggie sambusas (similar in concept to an Indian samosa or a fried dumpling). Always super fresh. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Like any good fried things should be. Good vegetarian options. I tried the abbeys vegetarian combo and baklava. The combo had 4 of the standard items one would get in a veggie Ethiopian combo (2 red and one yellow lentil, side made of cabbage carrot potato), some salad and also a dish made of okra which I really liked. The red lentils were really good. I also liked the baklava. The injera itself was a little sourer than what I would ideally like but overall great food. Nice Ethiopian food and very good service. The food is little spicy, but kids really like it. Definitely we will go again to try different dishes.

OKAY YUM!!! Wish I could give Shewat 800 stars!! This is the best neighborhood Ethiopian spot in all of North Oakland. I sometimes lay in bed just dreaming of the Abby’s Veggie Platter because it’s THAT.GOOD. No joke. See pix below of my loved one’s full face smiles. Grinning ear to ear!! We also brought friends who hadn’t tried Ethiopian food before and they LOVED IT!! The highest reviews. Get the honey ginger tea also :) Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $20–30 Recommended dishes Shewhat Meat and Veggie Combo

Great food, friendly and helpful staff. We reserved through Google Maps which ended up working out and they were responsive. No wait on a Saturday evening at 6:30PM. Would recommend the veggies (lentils were awesome) and the sambusas. Honey wine was interesting. Sweet with a very distinct herbal taste to it. Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $20–30
One of my favorite restaurants in Oakland. The food is delicious, and I always leave feeling nourished and comforted. Would recommend the veggie combo and the mushroom tibbs! I also appreciate that their injera is 100% teff, so no extra cost for our gluten free folks. A wonderful place to try Ethiopian food for the first time. I had lamb and red lentils because I couldn't decide which sounded better. I think I liked the lentils more, but when the lamb mixed with some vinegar on the plate (I think it was the salad dressing) I had one of my favorite bites! I enjoyed using their flatbread as my utensils too, it was not intimidating at all and allowed me to feel kind of like a kid again eating with my hands. Be aware the flatbread does have a fermented flavor, which for me, took a moment to get used to.
