Excellent service. The owner really explains everything on the menu. The food was also great I had the curry. Usually I don’t like curry but this one was African curry and he explained it taste different than typical curry. It was delish.and it was a little spicy just how I like. The food is made with a no frills concept. Eveything is pretty straight forward.Usually I don’t hang out with the vegans/vegetarians but this was a pleasant experience. Also they have the cutest rescue cat on the back porch.
We loved this place… as an avowed carnivore I was skeptical of a plant based food restaurant, but this place blew us away. Hummus, doubled cooked potatoes and a gumbo… we all left full and happy. Thank you Tom for being open on the day after Xmas… you saved us!
By far the best coffee on the island. Those visiting the azores and missing their home proper barista will undrstand what I'm writing here. Beyond coffee, the place offers a diverse food menu with unusual fresh combinations that you don't typically find around. Add to that the surfing atmosphere, the 70's playlist in the background and the hospitality of the owner and you'll find yourself coming back again and again.
A small restaurant and shop run by an amazing couple who are serving good healthy food while also trying to clean up the island!
The food and coffee is amazing and the owners take the time to get to know all their customers personally.
While the food is vegan for all those who aren't they do use cows milk in the coffee if requested and it's the best on the island.
Prices are also extremely reasonable!
Delicious, healthy & fresh food and drinks and very friendly service. Beautiful location with a sunny backyard. Loved our lunch here, exactly what I was looking for... We'll be back for Saturday Brunch!
Monk has everything you are looking for in a restaurant, cafe, or shop. The design is thoughtful, organic, and minimalist. I was taking interior design notes.
We tried everything on the menu and can confidently say the Monk team does not miss with a single item. Try the hummus plate for homemade hummus and delicious pickles. Try any smoothie or juice, which are fresh with a unique flavor. I loved the beet bliss. There is a dish of the day that is inventive and healthy. Lovely coffees as well.
The shop has beautiful handmade jewelry, candles, postcards, and apparel. We rented a surfboard and they were able to provide roof racks for the car.
But most of all, the Monk team is incredibly hospitable and kind. They are dedicated to healthy living and giving back to the planet.
Worth a visit (or 5!), we ate here 3 days in a row. Wish we could come back everyday.
Lovely place, great food and wonderful atmosphere. They make you feel at home as soon as you go through the door. The food is great and the coffee too. We had the bali burrito, the avocado toast and the oatmeal. If you want to surf, ask Tom, he is very helpful!
We'd been traveling in Azores for almost a month before arriving to Santa Maria. On the morning of our flight I googled "vegan" not expecting much to show up and not much did show up, but Monk popped up and said >vegan< No way, a fully vegan place not only in Azores (Sao Miguel doesn't even have a fully vegan establishment), but in little Santa Maria??!! YES!! We landed, picked up our rental and went right over for lunch (message ahead as hours can change seasonally). The food is so good, the space is lovely and the owners and staff are great. (There is a small boutique selling clothing, a small selection of surf gear and a beautiful jewelry and candle shop. Pick up a poncho, a candle (we had our's burning anytime we were home and picked up another on our way out) or a super special piece of jewelry designed by the owner (I don't want to give away too much, go see it and learn about it for yourself). The food: locals and visitors fill the space for coffee, the best juices we've ever had and super yummy food, more than half the people eating on any given day we visited, and we visited multiple times, were not even vegetarian, the food is that good AND super healthy. The place is new and continuing to evolve so ask about special dinners or events they may be putting on (or check their IG). Stop in, you'll be happy you did. Thank you to the owners for doing what you do. We hope to return one day and visit again. *Free street parking right out front.
Really nice food, great food and coffee and good vibes! Also the owner gave us really useful advice about what to do on the island.
A must when visiting Santa Maria !
