Do not pass this place by! The food was amazing! The young lady serving us was so sweet and her English was great and she was patient explain the different foods to us. If I lived here I'd eat here all the time.

Going back to your roots is an emotional and sweet experience. Specially if you are with your siblings (my sister and brother), that still lives in Puerto Rico. We stop by the doughnuts cart before reaching La Familia Restaurant, and bought a couple of sugar coated doughnuts and one filled with cream cheese. The sugar ones is our favorite. The cream cheese one lacked of flavor.
As we stoped at La Familia, we were not sure if the food was going to be the same as the one we were growing up. And it did not disappointed us. This "fonda" style place is amazing. Is like ordering food at your "abuelas" kitchen. Got to talk to the original owner's son (his dad passed away 15 years ago), and that was a real treat. We ordered white rice, beans, chicken stew, beef stew, even rabbit! With the exception of the beans (I am too spoiled with my husband's beans), everything was, well, food for the soul!

Leo Principe is a great host. An honest man, his family has been serving coffees here since '72. Now a proper restaurant for decades La Familia opens 6:30AM and closes by 3:00PM. They serve sandwiches and other preps for breakfast, along with coffee throughout the day. Foodstuffs are served early for any worker or person needing a good plate of food in the morning. First come first served food at the steam tables with the goods coming from the kitchen at a good pace. Good criollo seasoning, here you will always find a good stew or two every day. Restaurant has a ramp for the physically impaired and the restrooms are are spacious and can accomodate a wheelchair easily.
I grew up visiting Canovanas every summer as a kid and so this place has stood the test of time! It's nostalgic now more so than anything but the collection of antiquities is sure to please even the most seasoned of collectors & the food is almost as good as mi abuela makes it! Seating can be indoors or out on the terrace. Familiar typical food of the island made fresh everyday! Do come visit this peculiar yet simplistic establishment that has lasted for so many years. Buen provecho mi familia!
