In a glittering city hellbent on draining you of your life and money there is but one lone bastion of honesty.
I discovered this place quite by accident while wandering the casino floor. It was mid-morning and the lights and chimes of slot machines dazzled and frightened me. Like Odysseus I wandered, lost and slightly hungover until I washed up upon an island of calm. I found myself waiting for hot dogs; in line with other poor souls such as myself. People from all walks of life, colors, and creeds, waited as the lady behind the cart hustled with professional grace. Soon it was my turn and not a minute after I handed over three crumpled dollar bills did I receive my two hot dogs, hot and drizzled in mustard and relish. It is no exaggeration to say that this woman saved my life.
It’s been two weeks since my trip to Vegas, and for some reason I still think of those dogs. They weren’t particularly delicious although they did hit the spot at the time. I think I just really appreciate finding a place grounded by its simplicity. Such is the true American way.
