Home made bread baked in a dirt oven. Really tasty and some variety.
I usually buy the molasses bread which has a light sweetness; the white garlic loaf is soft and delicious and the cassava pone is really excellent. Everything is well priced.
They do a veggie and a sausage pizza to with her homemade sauce. It will be my next try. Stay tuned for more updates of my next visit.
Not bad considering the bad weather. The pone and sweetbread needed more sugar to me. The molasses bread has raisins! Lol. The pulorie was a fantastic surprise. I'll definitely do it again and I'll try the ice cream.
Dirt ovens have been a part of Trinibagonian culture for many years but in recent times we can think of it as a tool of nostalgia.
We journeyed cross country to Guayaguayare to Dove's Dirt Oven Delights where it is run by husband and wife Sanjid and Carolin and with the assistance of their seven children. It was such a beautiful sight to see just how effortlessly they work together to produce these amazing products in the form of breads, cakes and even pizza.
The family begins they day from as early as 5am to prepare for customers that begin to come in from 1pm everyday either to see and hear about their rich family history and taste just how unique Dirt oven products can be. The items are most times prepared on soharee leaves and when necessary baking pans and bottomless molds all made by the family.
You can get hops, bread (garlic, molasses, white, whole wheat), coconut bake, sweet bread, non alcoholic fruit cake, sponge cake, cassava pone and a variety of pizzas. The oven is prepped by burning large pallets in the oven until it reduces to coals and then swept away by a sage leaf broom and the items are loaded. This technique was passed on from Caroline's father aka Dove where the business gets its name.
The breads were soft and had a unique flavour due to the soharee leaves. The thin crust pizzas we really a treat and dont talk bout that non-alcoholic fruit cake...it just brought Christmas early for us.
Special thanks to the Boodhu family for allowing us to film and Marianne Hosein for speaking so highly of this place in our group that we had to visit.
It was a long drive from north on the very bad roads along the Manzanilla Mayaro roads. Was disappointed with the quality of the goods received. Did not find any coconut in the coconut bakes. No fruit in the sweet bread. The drops were made with yeast. Therefore not true drops. This place is over rated.
Seeing the actual oven was ideal. The aroma in the atmosphere was appetizing. The sweetbread and contained spices, savory. Garlic bread - mouthwatering, along with the coconut drops. Fortunately we did get 🍕, indescribably succulent. Raining cheese 🧀. Worth the trip.
Let me just say, its totally worth the drive.
Ofcourse order the day before and arrive to pick up. You get the bread warm.
I must admit, I was pleased to learn of the sophisticated stock system they used to ensure all orders were accounted for and the replenishing of the finished product (that's why you get the bread warm when you get there).
5 golden stars.
Definitely gonna be going to be patronizing again.
Most amazing experience visiting here. Arriving at Dove's, first thing observed was the amazing smell of fresh baked bread, cakes, and spices. Everything my family and I bought was absolutely delicious. Also, the vibe and the love from everyone there was greatly appreciated. The next time I visit Trinidad, I will be sure to visit Dove's Dirt Oven Delights again. Well worth the trip. Thank you for making my trip extra special.
