A few friends told us we had to check out Arizmendi Bakery & Pizzeria on San Pablo Avenue and 43rd Street but the first time we went, they were closed( they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). This morning, I walked over and almost died from the fragrant aromas of their fresh breads: sourdough and garlic-potato as well as other breads, scones, muffins and danishes! They also have salads and great coffee! Service Take out Meal type Breakfast Price per person $1–10 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes Chocolate Chip Cookies
The corn cherry scone is awesome, and the bread remains big and reasonably priced compared to a lot of other bakeries nearby. However! The pizza, while nice, is so boring! Despite the change up of ingredients, it always hits the same dull note. Never with tomato sauce or meat. Good to check in with a few times a year, but not much of a daily go-to. The real problem with this place is that there’s a permanent homeless encampment in the outdoor eating area, and it has become so foul and disgusting that you can’t actually sit there and eat. In fact, going and coming through the side door is very unpleasant, with pools of urine, feces, horrible smells, and unwashed humans dozing in sleeping bags or occupying the chairs meant for customers. The windows are filthy, and the place looks like it hasn’t really been cleaned in years. The owners would do well to hose down the outside and scrub it with bleach, at least weekly, and ensure that it remains in inviting space for patrons. And wouldn’t it seem that the worker-owners, who come and go every day, might look at the windows and surroundings and think “maybe we should clean this place once in a while and have some pride in our business”? Do collectives die by apathy?
While visiting our daughter in Oakland, we heard about Arizmendi’s Bakery & Pizzeria and had walked by on a Tuesday, but unfortunately for us they were closed. They are open Wednesday through Sundays! The first time I went into their store it was early in the morning and I almost passed out from the aroma of their breads. I purchased their sourdough and garlic Parmesan breads and some of their scones! Every was delicious and the breads weee still warm having recently come out of the oven. The last time I went there, I purchased a container of their red lentils soup that was spicy and delicious! While we had to fly back to New York, we’ll be returning soon. We also purchased one of their pizzas that was also great! And their prices are surprisingly reasonable! It’s very dirty and employees have no idea of health and safety code. And you have to buy 2 pcs min. At this location. Emeryville management definitely needs to mirror the Lakeshore location Service Take out Meal type Lunch Price per person $1–10 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
Excellent sourdough bread. 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't have a bread slicer in store, so I'll have to do it at home. Service Take out Meal type Breakfast Price per person $1–10 Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
